Course Summary
This course which will cover joint surgery, common orthopaedic problems and will be presented with emphasis on practical approach, tips and solutions to the problem.
This course is aimed at veterinary practitioners who wish to refresh and update their knowledge and practical skills in orthopaedic surgery .
10.5 CVE credits for Wednesday and 10.5 CVE credits for Thursday (21 CVE for the two days)

Principles of screw application. Position screws and lag screws.
Principles of plate application, compression, neutralisation, buttress.

Wetlab practical on plastic bones to demonstrate screw placement lag screw, position screw
Wetlab practical on cadaver, Lateral condylar fracture approach – lag screw + Kirschner wire fixation
Wetlab practical on cadaver transverse fracture radius & ulna, approach + compression plate fixation

Hamish, who is a graduate of Cambridge, was veterinary surgery lecturer in Bristol Vet School for 19 years until he left to set up his own very successful referral clinic.
Over the years he has written several textbooks including “A Guide to Canine and Feline Orthopaedic Surgery” which he did in collaboration with Steve Butterworth. Another of his works was the “Treatment of Equine Fractures”.
Over his career he has gained a vast amount of experience in orthopaedic surgery and this combined with his teaching background, this makes him the ideal tutor to provide very practical and instructive wetlab.
Shane Guerin MVB, MRCVS, MACVSc, DipVCSc, Cert SAO, Dip ECVS
Vet Surgery lecturer in UCD for many years and now running a successful referral hospital.
These courses consist of practical demonstrations combined with 'hands on' experience.
They are suitable for all practitioners, including those with little or no orthopaedic experience as well as those who wishing to update their skills.
Numbers will be limited thus allowing maximum opportunity for an intensive hands on learning experience, using cadavers.
All equipment and meals will be provided.
